The Importance of Clean Teeth During Pregnancy
A recent study followed 256 pregnant women during their first six weeks of pregnancy. Of these women, 22 developed gestational diabetes. Further tests revealed that these women had more inflammation and periodontal bacteria than the other women in the study.
Additionally, the women who developed gestational diabetes reported more gum bleeding when brushing. The women whose gums bled were also reported to have the highest glucose blood levels.
This study shows just how important it is for women who are planning to become pregnant to visit their dentist for a thorough cleaning and checkup. Furthermore, pregnant women should brush and floss daily in addition to visiting their dentists regularly.
If you find your gums are bleeding, contact your OB/GYN to discuss the possibility of a blood glucose test. Healthy teeth, healthy baby!
